“The biggest challenge we face in being sustainable is changing habits, something people have not really thought about before” Sonia Marshall
The above quote appeared in my local paper in an article about Sonia Marshall’s recent appointment to the Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE. Her primary role, according to the paper, is to “turn the understanding of that word (i.e. sustainability) into habit-breaking deeds that will reduce our usage of non-renewable resources and usher in a new understanding of our relationship to our world”.
That got me thinking about how we can all contribute to sustainability. No doubt Sonia Marshall’s work around sustainability has a very broad scope that will likely impact on every aspect of our lives. The article prompted me to consider sustainability from my perspective as a home business consultant. Whilst my work is largely focussed on finding creative ways to work from home, either with a home business or by some other home-based income stream, I realised that there were broader benefits outside of the lifestyle and work/life balance that really drove the article home for me.
A home based business can help sustainability. How?…..
Your office is at home - there is no commute by car or public transport
Your customer or client base is either local or electronic - they are easy to reach and it’s easy for them to reach you
Your operating costs are very low - a small home office uses far less valuable non-renewable resources than a typical corporate office.
You tend to shop locally because that’s where you work and live - buy local products, support your local community
You can become more involved in your local community - flexibility in your work life will enable this
There’s a lot to be said for working from home. Holistic Habitat can help find a solution to meet your needs.
